Dr. Vijay C.Bose practices at the Apollo speciality Hospital, India and is the chief surgeon of the Joint reconstruction unit, Chennai (JRGC). His special interest is in hip reconstruction of the young patient. This unit attracts patient from all over the world for hip reconstructive surgery. He has been involved with hip resurfacing for more than 15 years and has now performed more than 2000 hip resurfacing surgeries. He has the largest experience of hip reconstructive
surgery in Avascular necrosis (AVN), Coxa Vara & Ankylosing spondylitis.
He has set up the ARCH( Asian Regional centre for Hip resurfacing) in Chennai and this unit has the highest volume of hip resurfacings in Asia. www.hipresurfacingindia.com He travels within India and overseas extensively for lectures and for training other surgeons in complex hip surgery. He has developed many innovations in hip resurfacing surgery like the NCP ( neck capsule preserving ) approach and the "notch" test. He has also formulated the guidelines for suitability of hip resurfacing in AVN which is published in the British. Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He also has in interest in large size ceramic bearings in hips and does a large volume of deltamotion ceramic on ceramic hips. He is married with two children and a huge tennis enthusiast.
Dr. Vijay C. Bose graduated from Madras Medical College in 1990, having secured the Lt. Col. Thayumunusamy gold medal in orthopaedics from the college during the final year. After completion of postgraduate studies (M.S Orthopaedics) from the university of Mangalore and D.NB (Orth) from the national board of examination, he gained practical experience in orthopaedics by working in various private institutions in India. He worked as Registrar in Apollo Hospital, Chennai and in Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore. In 1995, he commenced subspecialty training in hip surgery at Birmingham U.K where he worked closely with Dr. Derek McMinn and Dr.Ronan Treacy the inventors of the Metal on metal hip resurfacing prosthesis for young people with hip arthritis. During his training in Birmingham he completed the M.Med.Sci trauma course from the University of Birmingham.
Later he did advanced training at Liverpool in shoulder surgery with Prof. Simon Frostick and Dr.Peter Brownson. During his stay there, he secured the MCh (Orth) qualification from the university of Liverpool and the FRCS (Orth) qualification from the Joint University Examination board of the United Kingdom. He successfully brought the new orthopaedic innovation of hip resurfacing surgery to south Asia for the first time in may 2000. He has also brought expertise in the nascent field of arthroscopic shoulder surgery to south India.
Dr. Vijay C. Bose presently works as chief surgeon of the Joint reconstruction unit, ( JRGC) Apollo Specialty Hospital in Chennai. He has delivered numerous guest lectures and performed live surgical demonstrations in hip and shoulder surgery all over India. He is part of the Asia Pacific hip resurfacing lead group and travels frequently to the Asia pacific countries to help local surgeons in hip resurfacing.
Dr. Bose conducted the first Asia-pacific conference on Birmingham Metal on metal hip resurfacing in March 2003 at Apollo Specialty Hospital. In addition, he frequently conducts many hip and shoulder CME programmes at Chennai. Recently he has introduced the bone conserving shoulder resurfacing procedure again for the first time in India at Apollo Specialty Hospital, Chennai.
